Equipment Maintenance
As identified in your system, work equipment needs inspection before use, some items require statutory inspection e.g. lifts, most items will also require some maintenance activity, this may be simple lubrication, to more complex parts adjustment, or, replacement.
There are two major concerns;
- Ensuring the maintenance activity is scheduled and is not missed
- Ensuring maintenance work is carried out in a safe manner
HSE report a growing concern over the numbers of persons injured or killed whilst carrying out equipment maintenance work.
Before maintenance is undertaken;
- Carry out a Risk Assessment; implement preventive and protective control measures.
- Ensure persons carrying out the work are competent.
- Engage an external qualified specialist if the expertise does not exist within the business.
- Isolate the equipment and ensure there is no stored energy (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic).
- Ensure isolation arrangements cannot be over-ridden.
- Complete a Permit to Work if the work includes work at height or specific hazards that may pose significant risk.
